Are you starting to feel like there’s more to life than just daily routine? Maybe you’ve had a sudden shift in perspective, an unshakable curiosity or a quite feeling nudging you toward something deeper.
But where do you start?
With so much information out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The truth is, there is no one right way to begin a spiritual journey – It’s a deeply personal and ever-evolving path.
However, there are some foundational practices that can help you connect with yourself, gain clarity and cultivate a sense of purpose. Whether you’re seeking inner peace, personal growth, or a stronger connection to the universe, these first steps will help guide you.
For many people, the interest may start with crystals, astrology or tarot cards. For some, it may start and end there. Being interested in these things doesn’t define your spiritual path. They are simply seeds of interest.
When I first started my journey, I didn’t know what any my interests were. I had a few crystal necklaces but really, I didn’t even know what my favorite color was. I felt like a shell of a human being.
So, when I had the dawn of realization that there is an infinite universe and we are all connected to it and the life force within it (With the assistance of hallucinogens), I knew it was time to start figuring it out.
Being ambushed with the desire for more but having absolutely no idea where to start is an unbelievable overwhelming task. Especially because in my life, I had no one that had been on such a journey. I was raised in a strict religious household (Christianity), and my friends at the time weren’t interested in the “hippie woo-woo” stuff. With no guidance, no one to talk to or support, what was I going to do?
I started by picking one thing that I felt had always held my interest, I just had never taken the time to dig into it. That was, watching the Midnight Gospel tv show on Netflix. After watching the series, that led me to searching Ducan Trussel online (The creator of Midnight Gospel). I listened and watched almost everything he had posted. By listening to him, it helped me start to understand my depression. It helped me feel understood, because at that point in time, Duncan Trussel was my only spiritual ally.
In one of Duncan’s podcasts, he had mentioned one of his favorite authors/ public speakers; Jack Kornfield. That led me to Jack’s book, A Path with Heart, which revealed a new door for me. Helping me explore mindfulness, healing and what it really means to live with intention. But with that newfound awareness came even more questions.
I wanted to understand the world around me – How our minds work, why we believe what we do, and the hidden layers of reality that often go unnoticed. This curiosity naturally led me to dive into topics like conspiracy theories, psychology, and human behavior. It was like uncovering pieces of a puzzle I didn’t even know I was trying to solve.
Even as I started to explore my interests, I found myself with more understating but still had no one to talk to about it all. I had never felt more alone. Until I stumbled upon a seven-day meditation retreat in Baja Mexico. I surely didn’t have the funds for any of it, but I dedicated myself to making enough money to go, because I knew I had to.
I made enough to pay for everything, and even with the heaping load of people saying that I absolutely should not go to Mexico alone and it was a bad idea, I went. I went and it was one of the best experiences of my life. For the first time, I had felt seen and understood. Like everything I was interested in and working towards wasn’t crazy. Being there is when I realized I wanted to create that experience for others, even if I only can reach one single person.
Starting a journey isn’t easy but 100% worth all of it. It’s important to keep in mind that you don’t need all the answers right away.
To be honest, there will be more moments of uncertainty than certainty. But that’s part of the journey – Learning to trust, surrender and embrace the unknown with patience and love.
If you’re in that space of being overwhelmed and not knowing how to start, here’s what I recommend:
♡ Start Small – If you feel like you don’t fully know yourself or know what interests you, pick one thing that you have always been curious about. Crystals, Astrology, Skin Care, Hair Care, Conspiracy Theories, The Basics of Communication, Psychology, Body Language. Whatever it is, see where it takes you. It can develop into more research, self-care routines, or a new topic you may have never considered.
♡ Books, Podcasts, Ted Talks – Reading or listening to other people talk can be an insanely useful tool. Some people that have had the biggest impact on me are Duncan Trussel, Jack Kornfield, Alan Watts, Feeling Path Illuminated (Spotify Podcast), and In Hindzsight (Podcast on Spotify & YouTube)
♡ Write – Start a journal virtually or physically. Being able to allow your thoughts to flow and having a safe space for them and yourself can help with bombarding emotions and ideas. We want to clean the cluttered mind.
♡ Meditate – Meditation is important and doesn’t have to be sitting still in silence or listening to gongs. Meditation can be doing anything with full attention, intention and presence. Doing the dishes without other stimulation or going on a silent walk, feeling the air around you and ground beneath you. I understand hearing “Just Meditate” is annoying and an eye roll. However, taking a few moments to give yourself that time is more rewarding than you’d think.
♡ Attend Events – Connecting with community and like-minded people is a necessity. If you’re in the thick of life and are feeling alone, there’s nothing like going to an event and feeling seen and connected to others.
